Library GRID Technology Research Center

Globalization in the modern world of science as well as developments in technology have proposed new challenges to libraries and librarians because both play an active role in gathering new information for society. In addition, digital libraries are vital in the process of increasing the country's overall development and international competitiveness.

In just a matter of time, information is easily transferred to technical resources and computers. The automation changes the traditional setup of the library in order for it to become beneficial to both the librarian and the user. If at first, the work of the reader becomes difficult and complex, the reader has the opportunity to access a range of different services that initially were unavailable. It is understandable that many feel that various concepts of the library need to be reviewed and reconsidered. The Internet has fundamentally changed the accessibility of library resources and has designed new ways of delivering them to the reader. The number of items registered on electronic platforms and media has continued to increase and as time progresses this trend will keep expanding.

The Library GRID Technology Research Center was established in 2011. The main mission of this research center is to scan and digitize electronic resources as well as designing and maintaining these resources. The first step in digitizing paper-based documents is to get a scan or picture of the original document, and then making sure the document is in the proper format for digitizing archival materials. The proposed installation is in PDF- format. The main objective is also to make these materials available on the Internet, which requires you to make a bibliographic description of these materials in accordance with internationally accepted standards.

The digital library collection is split into different categories. Armenian rare books from 1512-1800, Armenian early period printed books from 1801-1920. This collection includes printed books and periodicals. The materials are scanned with the use of “Adobe Photoshop” and “Adobe Acrobat Professional” for the PDF version. “ABBYY Finereader” is used for text recognition. Then the materials are placed in the Bibliographic (Aleph, Koha)  and Full Text databases. Books are inputted in a touchscreen kiosk or a virtual database. In addition, the collection of scanned materials will be archived in a separate server and the copies will be stored in an external hard drive and kept in separate building for security purposes.

The functions of the department include:

Publishing works of the library, proofreading, and design.

Network management, network design, installation and controls, operation of the system hardware and software, antivirus programs, computer viruses periodic inspection and cleaning.

Making sure the design and setup of the library website is up to date.

The department also has an entrance hall with free internet (Tamanian building 2nd floor, 9:00-17:00). This room is equipped with the newest generation of computers. The department works with all the libraries across Armenia and organizes free courses for librarians.

Our mission is to increase access to the collection, including the most important editions of literature and scientific materials, historical documents, journals, and maps. Our main goal is to present the cultural heritage of Armenia, as well as to show the richness of the collection and to enhance and develop relations with other libraries.
